GREEN AND YELLOW MEDIA

ON FEBRUARY 14TH, IN THE RURAL BACKWATER (PAGE 4, SECTION C) OF THE NEW YORK TIMES APPEARED AN ARTICLE ABOUT LOCAL TV COVERAGE OF POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS. IT CITED A STUDY BY THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AND SETON HALL WHICH EXAMINED 4,000 LOCAL TV NEWSCASTS WHICH COVERED 11 MAJOR MARKETS IN THE MONTH LEADING UP TO THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. THE FINDINGS WERE THAT THE BROADCASTS, WHICH INCLUDED NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, AND MIAMI, DEVOTED 8 TIMES AS MUCH AIRTIME TO CAR CRASHES AND OTHER ACCIDENTS THAN TO CAMPAIGNS FOR THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, STATE SENATE, CITY HALL AND OTHER LOCAL OFFICES.
ONE OF THE AUTHORS OF THE STUDY CONCLUDED THAT, "... MOST STATIONS FEAR THAT COVERING POLITICS IS RATINGS POISON. INTERESTINGLY, THEY DON'T SEEM TO FEAR THAT RUNNING A TORRENT OF POLITICAL ADS HURTS THEM WITH THEIR AUDIENCE."
APPARENTLY THE QUEST FOR MONEY TRUMPS ALL. IF IT BLEEDS IT LEADS. IF THERE'S SKIN IT'S IN. TRASH MAKES CASH.
MAJOR ‘MARKETS’, INDEED.
WELCOME TO THE GREENING OF THE MEDIA. CASH IS KING! SOME 'WHITE HOUSE JOURNALISTS' ARE EVEN BEING PAID TO 'JOURNAL'. THE WHITE HOUSE ENDORSES THE PRACTICE, AND THE CHECKS. THE GREEN MEDIA'S GOAL IS TO ATTRACT A CROWD; THE BIGGER THE BETTER, IGNORING THE PREMISE THAT IN OUR REALITY- SHOW, DUMBED-DOWN WORLD, ATTRACTING A CROWD JUST MAY BE A SIGN OF FAILURE; PROOF OF ABANDONING JOURNALISTIC RESPONSIBILITIES.
EVEN WORSE THAN THE PURSUIT OF GREEN, IS THE YELLOWING OF OUR MEDIA. THEY HAVE BECOME FRIGHTENED OF DOING THEIR JOB. THEY THINK THAT TO QUESTION OR CHALLENGE A POLICY IS TO LOOK UNPATRIOTIC. THEY HEEDED PRESIDENT BUSH'S, “YOU’RE EITHER WITH US OR AGAINST US" PROCLAMATION. SOME ELEMENTS IN THE YELLOW MEDIA EVEN SEE GREAT POTENTIAL IN PATRIOTISM AS A PROFIT LEADER, IGNORING, EVEN ATTACKING ANY DISSENTING POINT OF VIEW. THEY SIRED A FUTURES MARKET IN FLAG WAVING. SO, BETWEEN THE GREEN GREED AND YELLOW FEAR, THE MEDIA HAS REINVENTED ITSELF INTO A WELL-BEHAVED AND WELL-REWARDED PRODUCT. A USER-FRIENDLY JOURNALISM THAT GETS USED BY THE ADMINISTRATION. A LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT JOURNALISM. ANY SERIOUS EFFORTS AT TRUTH NEED NOT APPLY; YOU'RE NOT WELCOME HERE.WE'VE GOT A SAME SECT MARRIAGE GOING ON. MUCH OF AMERICA’S MEDIA HAS SOLD OUT TO THE HIGHEST AND MOST POWERFUL BIDDER.
RECOVERY WILL BE PAINFUL, BUT ESSENTIAL. THE MEDIA MUST ENTER A REHABILITATION CLINIC AND GO THROUGH A WITHDRAWAL- STYLE DETOXIFICATION PROGRAM. THEY MUST RELEARN TO CHOOSE THE SIGNIFICANT OVER THE SEXY; THE IMPORTANT OVER THE INTERESTING; THE CONSEQUENTIAL OVER THE AMUSING; AND MOSTLY, END THIS PORNOGRAPHIC NEW- WAVE PATRIOTISM AT THE EXPENSE OF TRUTH. SERIOUS JOURNALISTS MIGHT START WITH A PRESS CONFERENCE WALK-OUT
(ASSUMING THEY ARE ALLOWED TO WALK IN ) AGAINST JOURNALIST 'IMPLANTS' AND POLITICAL BOTOX. CAN YOU IMAGINE A MEDIA STRIKE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT? CONSIDER HEARING QUESTIONS AND FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS WHICH WON'T PERMIT THE ADMINISTRATION TO WAG THE LAP DOG.
DESPERATE CITIZENS ARE WATCHING DESPERATE TELEVISION BECAUSE OUR MEDIA HAS BECOME DESPERATE FOR GREENBACKS AND WHITE HOUSE APPROVAL. WE NEED RED WHITE AND BLUE, NOT YELLOW AND GREEN. OUR HOMELAND MEDIA NEEDS AN EXTREME MAKEOVER.
